APPEAL was mentioned during Rai3’s GEO programme as an example of research and sustainable innovation applied to the reduction of plastic in the agri-food sector.

On 21 May 2026, the APPEAL project was mentioned during GEO, the Rai3 programme dedicated to nature, environment, society and sustainability.

The reference came during a discussion on bioplastics and sustainable innovation between host Sveva Sagramola and Enrico Fontana, Head of Legambiente’s National Observatory on Environment and Legality.

During the conversation, Fontana highlighted APPEAL as a positive example of research and innovation applied to the reduction of plastic in the agri-food sector, referring to the edible and compostable labels developed by the Department of Energy of Politecnico di Milano.

The mention reflects the growing attention around alternatives to conventional plastics and the need for more sustainable solutions in food packaging. Although fruit and vegetable labels are small components, they are part of a much wider challenge involving waste management, compostability, product traceability and consumer safety.

APPEAL addresses this challenge by developing a new generation of labels for fruit and vegetables that are edible, compostable and designed to support authentication and traceability along the supply chain.

Being included in a public discussion on bioplastics and sustainable innovation confirms the relevance of the project’s approach and the increasing interest in solutions that can reduce plastic use while supporting a safer and more transparent agri-food system.
